In April 2015, a 50-year-old black man named Walter Scott was shot in the back and killed by Charleston, South Carolina police officer Michael Slager.
An alert passerby video-recorded the shooting on a smart phone. This video has been played over and over on the Internet. The video and the many news reports make it look to me as though Michael Slager should at least be convicted of manslaughter, and possibly of second-degree murder.
However, yesterday (Dec. 5, 2016) the jury judging the case declared a mistrial. They could not agree on a verdict.
Slager will be retried.
This case is immensely important. Shooting a fleeing man in the back and killing him can't be allowed to drift out of sight. Slager needs to be convicted of misusing his police power to cause a fatality when it could have been handled very differently.
