About Reine Duell Bethany
Reine Duell Bethany grew up in Dayton, Ohio. Her career training focused on both dance and literature. She trained at the Schwarz School of the Dance and performed with the Dayton Ballet Company under artistic directors Josephine “Miss Jo” Schwarz, Bess Saylor, and Jon Rodriguez. Miss Jo, an early School of American Ballet scholarship student, maintained connection with Balanchine and the Ford Foundation Scholarship program after founding the Dayton Ballet. Bethany’s brothers, Daniel and Joseph Duell, were principals with the New York City Ballet during the last decade of Balanchine’s life. Bethany herself earned a master’s in English at Wright State University, and then ran her own ballet school and children’s company in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. She and her husband Charles subsequently moved to New York City, where she performed with the Joyce Trisler Danscompany. During this time period, Bethany wrote feature articles for the Brookyn Phoenix. She turned completely to freelance writing and editing when she and Charles started raising their family of four. Their daughter Marigold became a veterinarian, their son Ariel an actor-musician, son Ian a professional ballet dancer, and son Justin a pilot. Bethany lives with her husband in Long Island, New York, where she continues as a writer, editor, and adjunct English professor. In 2012 her young adult biography of George Balanchine was published by Branden Books: Balanchine: Russian-American Ballet Master Emeritus. She is working on a trilogy whose overall title is The Shu Factor. Book I, War of the Roads, will be published in spring 2016 by Branden Books.
